Prevention of Neglect
Neglect in a nursing home can be avoided as long as the following are being adhered to.
- Sufficient staffing levels in the nursing home.
- Assessment of patient's functional capacity on admission to the nursing home. This should then be reviewed on a regular basis.
- The development of a care plan as a result of the assessment of the patient's functional capacity.
- Prevention of the patient's ability to perform day-to-day tasks such as bathing, eating and communicating. If a patient is unable to perform these tasks then the nursing home should provide the necessary service.
- Prevention of the development of pressure sores.
- Provide appropriate treatment for incontinent patients so as to reduce the risk of bladder infections.
- Provide adequate supervision and assistive devices to prevent accidents.
- Maintain proper nutrition and hydration.
- Ensure that patient's medication is administered correctly so as to reduce the risk of errors occurring.
- Provide supervised medical care for each patient by a physician.
- Maintain proper clinical records for each patient.
