Medication Abuse in Nursing Homes
One of the forms of abuse suffered by some in nursing homes is that they are receiving incorrect medication.
This can be in the form of the following:
- Receiving a drug that has never been prescribed by their doctor and so should not be dispensed to them.
- Taking a form of medication inappropriate for their dietary requirements.
- Notes saying that a patient should have a particular form of medication but no record of them actually receiving it.
- Drugs being taken that are inappropriate for the elderly.
What can you do?
- Become involved in the patient's course of treatment.
- Note any changes in the patient's behaviour.
- Examine the patient's medication records to see whether the patient is being overmedicated.
